US report highlights human rights ‘violations’ in Pakistan
The United States has released its annual 2022 Country Reports on Human Rights Practices, covering 198 countries and territories. The report highlights concerns over human rights violations in Pakistan, including incidents of extrajudicial killings, arrests, and enforced disappearances by government forces. The lack of government accountability and abuses, including corruption and misconduct, often going unpunished, fostering a culture of impunity among perpetrators, is also noted. The report points out restrictions on freedom of expression and media in Pakistan and the torture of journalists. Discrimination against women, children, and workers in Pakistan has also been highlighted. The report also covers violations of human rights in India, including restrictions on freedom of expression and press under the Modi government, police violence, and extrajudicial killings. Violent acts on religious grounds in India also continued in 2022, and few investigations or prosecutions of human rights abuses by Indian forces were carried out.
