Maulana Fazlur Rehman, the President of the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) and the Chief of the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUIF-F), has called for the postponement of the upcoming elections in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) due to the deteriorating law and order situation in the country. The general elections in Punjab are scheduled for April 30, while the date for the polls in KP is yet to be announced. Fazlur Rehman blamed the current government led by Prime Minister Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) for the economic crisis and ruining the country’s economy. He also expressed doubts about the ability of the police and other institutions to provide security during the election process, citing rising terrorism in the country. Furthermore, he claimed that former Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) chief Lt Gen (retd) Faiz Hameed and former Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Mian Saqib Nisar were still lobbying for Khan and called for the institutions to “rein them in”.
