Karachi LG polls: PPP, JI secure equal no of seats
According to a notification issued by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), both the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) won 84 seats each of union committees (UC) in the Karachi local government elections held on January 15. The final results of a total of 215 UCs were declared by the ECP. The PTI won 40 UCs, PML-N won 5, and JUI won 1, while an independent candidate also emerged as a winner. It should be noted that MQM-P boycotted the second phase of elections held in 16 districts of Sindh’s two divisions, Karachi and Hyderabad, on Sunday. In Hyderabad, PPP won the most seats, with 92, while the PTI won 39, and TLP won 2 seats. Independent candidates secured 13 seats. The Sindh local body polls witnessed long delays, attracting criticism from all major parties participating in the elections.
