PML-N Senior Vice President Maryam Nawaz distanced herself from the coalition government led by her uncle Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, saying that her party is not responsible for its performance. She reportedly made these remarks in a recent meeting with representatives of PML-N’s youth wing. Maryam stated that her party cannot be blamed for the performance of the coalition government and that PML-N’s government will be formed when Nawaz Sharif returns to Pakistan. Her statement comes as the PML-N-led government faces pressure over skyrocketing inflation and soaring food prices ahead of general elections scheduled to take place later this year. Finance Minister Ishaq Dar recently unveiled a mini-budget worth Rs 170 billion that carried some highly inflationary measures but spared commercial banks and traders of any new taxation, weakening the coalition government’s case of putting the burden on sectors that could bear it most.
