Nankana Sahib DSP, SHO suspended after violent mob lynches man over blasphemy allegations

The incident in Nankana Sahib, where a man was lynched by a mob over blasphemy allegations, has caused widespread concern in Pakistan. The Inspector General of Police (IG) Dr Usman Anwar has suspended two senior police officers for failing to prevent the lynching and directed an inquiry into the incident. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has also taken notice of the incident and ordered an investigation. Federal Minister for Poverty Alleviation and Social Safety Shazia Marri has expressed concern over the increasing trend of violence related to blasphemy allegations and called for a need to counter with an effective narrative to achieve peace and harmony. PTI Vice President and former information minister Fawad Chaudhry has criticized the collapse of the state machinery. The Pakistan Ulema Council has also condemned the incident. A report by the Centre for Research and Security Studies has stated that 89 citizens have been killed in 1,415 accusations and cases of blasphemy in the country since independence. The report also highlights the misuse of blasphemy laws and suggests amending the existing laws to give equal punishment to those who level false blasphemy accusations.
