New military leadership realises regime change experiment ‘failed’: Imran Khan
Imran Khan, the former Prime Minister of Pakistan and current chairman of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), has recently stated that the military leadership in the country has come to the realization that the “experiment of regime change has failed”. In an interview with Voice of America, he emphasized the importance of having elected governments have both the authority and responsibility that comes with being elected by the people. He stressed that the balance of power must be such that the elected government has both the responsibility and authority, and that the system will fail if the two are not vested in the same individual.
Imran Khan also spoke about his relationship with the military while he was in office as the Prime Minister. He stated that the military policies in Pakistan are dependent on one individual, the army chief, and that the relationship between the military and the civilian government depends on the personality of the army chief. He went on to mention that his relationship with the former army chief, General Qamar Javed Bajwa, was positive in the sense that his government was able to receive the support of the Pakistan Army. However, he also criticized the former army chief for favoring “some of the biggest crooks in the country”.
In regards to the demand for general elections, Imran Khan stated that it is not possible to have free and fair elections anymore, as the credibility of the Election Commission of Pakistan has been destroyed. He also shared his views on Pakistan’s bilateral ties with Afghanistan, stating that it is inevitable for Pakistan to have a good relationship with Afghanistan, regardless of the government in power there. He expressed his disappointment with the current government for failing to get assistance from Afghanistan against rising terrorism in the country and emphasized that Pakistan cannot afford to have another war on terror.
