ChatGPT is an artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot that has the ability to write essays, solve math problems, and develop research papers, which has caused concern among university faculty as they question how they can ensure that actual learning is taking place in universities if students are using AI to complete assignments. This is just one example of how AI-powered technological developments will impact society. Economists have long discussed the labor-displacing nature of these technologies and the potential for social unrest. Some futurists have even warned that AI could eventually attain superintelligence and weaponize to exterminate humans. However, it is important to note that we are currently far from attaining Artificial General Intelligence and the nature of work will inevitably change with new jobs opening up. Additionally, machines do not have the ability to feel or perceive themselves as part of a community and do not possess the same motivations as humans. It is important to not be alarmist but to consider the potential impacts and take steps to mitigate potential negative consequences.
